November 2025

Dear colleagues and friends,

We are delighted to share this exciting news! As we announced in our “Open Letter” earlier this year, the Quantitative Medical Imaging Coalition (QMIC) has officially launched as an independent organization. We are here to carry on and expand the vital work started by RSNA/QIBA, and we couldn’t be more pleased to bring you this update.

Our Mission

Our mission is to advance the science and implementation of quantitative imaging in clinical practice and clinical trials.

Our Foundation

QMIC was officially established as a U.S. non-profit corporation on March 31, 2025, and we have been approved by the U.S. IRS as an IRC Section 501(c)(3) tax exempt, public charity. While we are a U.S.-registered organization, our mission is global. We are a community open to all passionate volunteers who want to help transform medicine through quantitative imaging.

Our Vision

At QMIC, we believe in using the power of quantitative medical imaging to revolutionize personalized medicine. We’re bringing together a dynamic and committed group of volunteers from academic and clinical institutions, industry, regulatory bodies, and funding agencies to make this vision a reality.

Our Goals

Working from a foundation of rigorous measurement science (metrology), our goals are to:

  • Develop and refine quantitative imaging (QI) and quantitative imaging biomarker (QIB) standards documents.
  • Enable the widespread use of these standards documents in both clinical practice and research.
  • Collaborate with education programs to champion the application of quantitative imaging.

Meet Our Leadership and Teams

We are proud to introduce our founding Board of Directors, a group of nine dedicated experts who also serve as our Executive Committee.

  • Michael Boss
  • Caroline Chung
  • Patricia Cole
  • Richard Ehman
  • Juan Carlos Ramirez Giraldo
  • Timothy Hall
  • Daniel Sullivan
  • Richard Wahl
  • Gudrun Zahlmann

At our first business meeting in July, we elected our officers:

  • Co-Presidents: Gudrun Zahlmann, PhD, and Caroline Chung, MD
  • Secretary: Richard Wahl, MD
  • Treasurer: Timothy Hall, PhD

In addition to our leadership, we have 15 active Biomarker Committees focused on a wide range of imaging applications, from CT and MRI to ultrasound and PET. This is where the real work happens, and we are so grateful for the commitment of our volunteers. In 2025 we welcomed a new Biomarker Committee working on whole body DWI.

Looking Ahead: An Opportunity for Impact

The time for quantitative imaging is now. We are seeing growing awareness and interest from the scientific and clinical community. This gives us a unique and timely opportunity to make a real difference.

Our Strategy:

  • Recruit and engage new volunteers to ensure our existing standards documents are completed and updated.
  • Focus on high-impact imaging biomarkers that can immediately benefit clinical research and practice.
  • Educate the community by highlighting QI at annual meetings and through publications, with a special focus on key concepts like measurement uncertainty.

Why This Matters:

  • Improved Patient Care: By building trust in imaging data, we can reduce the need for repeat scans and improve confidence in measurements for precision medicine.
  • Accelerated Innovation: Consistent and transparent imaging data will accelerate the development and safe implementation of AI in medicine.

We are excited about the future of QMIC and its potential to improve patient outcomes and advance the field of medical imaging. We invite you to join us on this journey! Stay tuned for updates on our website and social media channels.

Sincerely,

The QMIC Team
